The Nike Zoom Pegasus 31 Running Shoe's breathable mesh upper is straddled by a series of no-sew overlays that reinforce its construction without adding undue weight, in turn delivering a shoe that is simultaneously lightweight, robust and flexible. A midfoot saddle cinches the foot and delivers a secure lockdown that can be manipulated by tightening the laces. Additionally, reflective membranes positioned under the saddle preserve the wearer's visibility in poor light, whilst an internal heel counter secures the foot in place to prevent chafing and consequent blistering.

A fitsole sockliner conforms to the shape of the foot to deliver optimal support and an improved fit underfoot. A top loaded Nike Zoom unit positioned in the heel sits closer to the foot and absorbs the initial impact of the heelstrike phase of the gait, whilst a premium Cushlon foam cushioning unit attenuates shockwaves and provides springy, responsive cushioning.

An environmentally preferred rubber outsole compound adopts a Waffle configuration to deliver durable, consistent grip on a multitude of different surfaces. A segmented, rubber crash rail positioned on the lateral side works with a series of deep flex grooves to accommodate a smoother transition from rearfoot to forefoot, whilst a tapered, radiused cross rocker positioned toward the forefoot promotes a natural range of motion.
