Barefoot running's principle aim is to encourage people to adopt a more natural running style that obeys the body's evolutionary development. The human foot is engineered to strike closer to the midfoot than most cushioned running shoes allow, as such, barefoot running strips the superfluities away and retains only what is necessary to protect the foot from abrasive terrain. A more natural gait cycle conditions tendons, ligaments and muscles, whilst developing stronger, healthier feet and an improved posture.

Upper

A TPU mesh replicates the textural robustness of metal whilst still allowing air to fully permeate the shoe's interior, promoting a cooler, drier and altogether more pleasant environment. Dynamic Fit technology utilises a Flywire cable system to wrap the arch and midfoot for a secure, stable and adaptive fit, whilst an open mesh tongue alleviates lacing pressure and further increases ventilation; synthetic leather applied throughout the heel increases stability.

Midsole

The low-profile, Phylite midsole's robust construction allows it to also serve as the shoe's outsole, reducing the number of parts, potential fail points and weight. A sidewall wrap-up design cradles the heel and midfoot to retain an anatomically beneficial posture with the foot perfectly aligned with the footbed, thereby preventing the upper and midsole from separating during side-to-side and diagonal movements.

Outsole

A series of solid rubber pods have been arranged in an aggressive delta-node configuration throughout the heel and perimeter of the forefoot to provide substantial traction and multi-surface durability. Deep flex grooves extend across the entire outsole, allowing the shoe to adhere to the contours of the foot and accommodate a more natural, beneficial gait style; a DiamondFLX design enhances flexibility whilst providing a lightweight, low-profile fit.

  • TPU Mesh - Replicates the textural robustness of metal whilst still allowing air to fully permeate the shoe's interior, promoting a cooler, drier and altogether more pleasant environment.
  • Dyanmic Fit Technology - Utilises a Flywire cable system to wrap the arch and midfoot for a secure, stable and adaptive fit.
  • Open Mesh Tongue - Alleviates lacing pressure and further increases ventilation.
  • Synthetic Leather - Applied throughout the heel for increased stability.
  • Phylite Midsole - Increased durability allows this to double as the shoe's outsole, reducing the number of parts, potential fail points and weight.
  • Sidewall Wrap-Up Design - Cradles the heel and midfoot to retain an anatomically beneficial posture with the foot perfectly aligned with the footbed, thereby preventing the upper and midsole from separating during side-to-side and diagonal movements.

'After learning that Stanford athletes had been training barefoot on the university's golf course, three of Nike's most innovative and creative employees set out to develop a shoe that felt natural and weightless, similar to bare feet. In 2002, they examined a group of men and women with pressure measuring insoles taped to their feet, using high-speed cameras to capture images of each foot in motion. The team spent eight years studying the biomechanics of shoeless running. The results yielded a profound understanding of the foot's natural landing angle, pressure and toe position, allowing Nike designers to build an unconventional and flexible running shoe from the inside out.' - Nike
