Nike have combined two of their bestselling shoes - the Free and the Flyknit - to create a shoe that is more lightweight, flexible and snug than ever.

Nike Free technology is designed to help runners run more efficiently and offer the most comfortable barefoot experience, with multi-directional flex grooves enhancing natural flexibility.

The compressive Flyknit upper features highly elastic threads that conform to the foot for a sock-like, locked-in fit. It seamlessly integrates areas of stretch, support and breathability where you need it most. Seams, weight and areas of friction are all reduced as a result. The polyester yarn is more open in areas that need greater flexibility and tighter in areas that demand more support. Nike Flyknit also eliminates the need for the multiple materials and material cuts used to make the uppers of traditional shoes, significantly reducing waste.

Flywire technology integrates with the laces for a dynamic, supportive fit. Flywire gets its strength from thin nylon fibres strategically placed on the upper of the shoe to hold the foot in place, helping to reduce slippage during activity. This allows for a massive reduction in weight because material is used only where it¡¯s needed for structure.

For a close-to-the-ground sensation, the Lunarlon insole cushioning features a soft, yet resilient foam core encased within a supportive foam carrier for lightweight, ultra-plush cushioning, springy response and support. This innovative foam, invented at Nike and 30 percent lighter than traditional Phylon, allows the force of impact to be more evenly distributed and helps reduce painful pressure points on your foot.

The highly flexible drop-in midsole offers the natural-motion benefits of Nike Free with the soft, responsive cushioning of Lunarlon. The flex groove design¡ªmade up of deep cuts along the length and width of the midsole¡ªenhances natural range of motion, encourages a smooth, efficient stride and helps maintain stability.

After learning that Stanford athletes had been training barefoot on the university's golf course, three of Nike's most innovative and creative employees set out to develop a shoe that felt natural and weightless, similar to bare feet. In 2002, they examined a group of men and women with pressure measuring insoles taped to their feet, using high-speed cameras to capture images of each foot in motion. The team spent eight years studying the biomechanics of shoeless running. The results yielded a profound understanding of the foot's natural landing angle, pressure and toe position, allowing Nike designers to build an unconventional and flexible running shoe from the inside out.

Nike Flyknit technology was inspired by feedback from runners craving a shoe with the snug (and virtually unnoticed) fit of a sock. Nike embarked on a four-year mission with teams of programmers, engineers and designers to create the technology needed to make the knit upper with static properties for structure and durability. Then the precise placement of support, flexibility and breathability-all in one layer-was refined. The result is a featherweight, form-fitting and virtually seamless upper.

  • Flyknit Upper - Uses a precise knit construction process that integrates stretch and support for a snug, personalised fit.
  • Lunarlon Insole - Replaces both the traditional midsole and sockliner, reducing layers and adhesives for lightweight comfort.
  • Flywire - Helps provide ultra-lightweight support and comfort for your foot.
  • Drop-In Midsole - Offers the natural-motion benefits of Nike Free with the soft, responsive cushioning of Lunarlon.
  • Deep Flex Grooves - Allow your foot to move freely, while still providing a plush, resilient ride mile after mile.
  • Ultra-Thin Waffle Outsole - Uses less rubber than traditional outsoles for greater flexibility and lightweight durability plus multi-surface traction.
  • Phylon Heel Clip - For underfoot support.
  • Weight - 184 grams (men's size 10).

Nike Frees are different than traditional athletic shoes. They¡¯re designed to let your feet move more freely and naturally, which means your muscles will be doing a bit more work than demanded of them in some other athletic shoes. Nike encourages you to get used to them gradually for a safer, more effective and more enjoyable experience. Please visit for more information on how to get the best from your Nike Free shoes.
